“Mapping The Nation In Januar Yap’s Arkipelago”
Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu

ABSTRACT
In Januar Yap’s recent novel, Arkipelago, the nation is being mapped and written by different characters who make sense of the nation from where they are situated in the archipelago, “claiming space” as if the capital did not matter. While the stories are conscious of the existence of “other” islands they are also seen as a shifting, as navigating, an archipelagic imaginary that counters hegemonic narratives to narrate stories from a multiple locus standi.
