“Sex, Sexuality and the City in Vicente Rama’s Novels”

Dr. Yu’s lecture will focus on the novels of Vicente Rama who was among the well-known novelists of his times. With their explicit critique of the emerging regimes of power/knowledge in the fields of sexuality, Rama’s novels “Ang Silot ni Bathala” and “Donya Marcosa” anticipate Michel Foucault’s theories of sexuality, as well as that of the author, elaborated fifty years later. His novels show a narrative genre that challenges and resists disciplinary constraints as it provides a unique view of sexuality and gender in twentieth-century fiction that can be read in the light of gender theory and his efforts on good governance.
