Abstract:
In her lecture titled “Ubec: Cebu Reimagined” Cecilia Manguerra Brainard talks about how she created her mythical setting of Ubec, which she uses in many of her short stories and her three novels: When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, Magdalena, and The Newspaper Widow. She explains how creating this mythical setting freed her up to reimagine Cebu and its inhabitants. She talks about some of the fictional characters who were inspired by people of Cebu.
