Book launch of Sugilambong: The Prewar Cebuano Novel

Follow online on Facebook as the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) in cooperation with the University of San Carlos Cebuano Studies Center (USC CSC) will launch the book entitled Sugilambong: The Prewar Cebuano Novel by Dr. Erlinda K. Alburo at the Rizal Museum on July 28, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the 2nd Floor, Rizal Memorial Library & Museum, Oِsmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.

The book features the 18 Cebuano novels that became popular within the prewar period also known as the “Golden Age of Vernacular Literature” in the country. These are a selection of propaganda and satire, as well as escape and entertainment novels. The book shows the significance of the novels and how they portrayed the zeitgeist, its relations to Cebuano literary production and aesthetic directions that evolved during the prewar period.

Dr. Erlinda K. Alburo, former director of the Cebuano Studies Center, has authored various books on local history, Cebuano culture, literary biography and poetry. She was also named one of the top 15 literary writers in Cebuano after the war by the BATHALAD in 2019. For her cultural advocacy in promoting Cebuano language and literature she received achievement awards from: the National Commission for Culture and the Arts 1st Taboan Literary Arts Festival (2010), the University of the Philippines Department of English and Comparative Literature (2011), the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) Gawad Paz Marquez Benitez (2015) and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) Kampeon ng Wika (2016).

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael L. Rama, chair of the CHAC, will be joined by National Artist for Literature Dr. Resil B. Mojares for their individual addresses for the occasion. There will also be a roundtable discussion from scholars in the field of Cebuano literary studies such as Charles Dominic Sanchez and Hope Sabanpan-Yu. Clyde Inso Chan will give a saxophone performance for the activity. The book cover is from a painting by Josua Cabrera which belongs to the art collection of Atty. Jesus Garcia Jr.  

Tugkad: A Literary and Cultural Studies Journal of the Cebuano Studies Center will also be presented during the launch.
