Southeast Asia Seminar 2012

The USC Cebuano Studies Center (CSC) and Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies held the 36th Southeast Asia Seminar from Nov. 20-23, 2012 at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts Theater, USC Talamban Campus.

The theme of this year’s seminar is “Cities and Cultures in Southeast Asia.” The seminar looks at the social and cultural processes and practices out of which cities emerge, grow, decay, and change.

The seminar showcased international scholars and researchers. The speakers on History and Heritage were Chris Baker, J.E.R. Bersales, Jose Neil Garcia and Hope Sabanpan-Yu; for Cities and Communities were Kenta Kishi, Loh Kah Seng and Nathan Badenoch; and for Economic Transformation and Political Negotiation were Pasuk Phongpaichit, Masaki Okamoto and Wataru Kusaka.

The keynote address was given by Dr. Resil Mojares, Professor Emeritus of USC, and a leading social anthropologist, historian and critic in the Philippines. The final keynote was given by urban development specialist Florian Steinberg. More than 35 academics from Southeast Asia and all over the world participated in the three-day discussions including seven faculty members from USC.

A field trip to relevant groups working for Cebu’s development was done on the fourth day. Participants visited the cultural heritage sites, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. and Mactan Export Processing Zone Authority, among others.
